Benefits of non-niche writing

While there are some pitfalls to non-niche writing, there are also some significant benefits that a freelance writer should consider before deciding that this is not right for them. Some of these benefits include:

Ability to offer more diverse work
- For freelance writers who are developing a client base, the ability to offer a more diverse portfolio may find that they have an easier time developing and maintaining clients. For example, a freelance writer may be able to get one (or more) clients who specialize in setting up websites and blog for clients but need writers to provide content. This could mean that if a writer is open to writing about various subjects, they could have a source of ongoing work without worrying about searching for new clients all of the time;

Learning opportunities may be greater - While some freelance writers may be tempted to stick with what they know, the opportunities to write about a wide variety of subject matter can mean that the writer is learning more. While it is true that freelance writers who specialize in a single topic still need to keep up to date on new information, the diversity of non-niche writing provides even greater learning opportunities;

Earning potential may be greater - There is a widely accepted belief that specific topics tend to generate more readers and therefore more income potential. Technology, business and finance topics generally are viewed as higher earning topics, however, some writers know nothing (or very little) about these subjects. Fortunately, there are many great resources available both online and offline that can help enhance a freelance writers earning capabilities.
