In the Bible, it is said that Abraham was the most prosperous of his time; he had many cattle, tents, money, etc, etc. However, I doubt that he was materially richer than dozens of the rich and famous nowadays. To begin with, he didn’t live in a mansion, or own a Summerhouse in Florida, or a yatch, or have millions of dollars in several bank accounts, a private jet to travel all over the world. That is because prosperity includes far more than merely material possessions and the selfish indulgence of the body. Consequently, it is also strongly implied that Abraham –besides having enough for his necessities–, was a “righteous” man in the good sense of the word, that he was a happy soul indeed, and that he enjoyed the presence of God deep down in his heart of hearts. He was, in today’s language, a Self- realized human being.
However, none of us have reached to the perfection of our souls, capable of being happy as the exemplary child from whom Jesus conveyed a lesson to his disciples. Jesus would have asked the disciples: who is greater in Heaven: this little child, or an ego seeking –and never finding enough of it, by the way– the pleasures of the world in a selfish and unconscious manner?
