Side Effects of Allergy Medication

Aside from the increased heart rate and risks associated with tachycardia, allergy medications can cause an increase in appetite and a loss of taste and smell. These types of side effects may be less noticeable to a lot of allergy sufferers, but long-term use can lead to weight gain and increases in body fat. Studies have also shown that those who use allergy medications for longer periods of time are also at an increased risk of developing type II diabetes.

While some allergy medications can lead to drowsiness and depression, their non-drowsy counterparts have been found to contribute to anxiety and sleeplessness. Perhaps one of the most important side effects for both students and those that require a great deal of concentration is the interference with certain kinds of neurological functioning. Allergy medications have been shown to lead to decreased attention spans as well as interruptions in our though processes.
