Facebook tried to hire a prominent public relations firm to make stories criticizing privacy practices of Google. However, it backfired because the blogger that this firm approaches declined the assignment and went public divulging the offer.
The intended smear campaign against Google was denied by Facebook stating that it never authorized somebody to ruin the company. Rather, Facebook hired Burson-Marsteller to investigate how a new Google Service called Social Circle collects and uses data about people.
